Oil tanker torched on NH-39

Imphal, May 14:
Even as the economic blockade imposed by the All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur is in force, an oil tanker carrying kerosene oil was burnt by unidentified miscreants at Khongnem located about 10 kms north of Senapati district headquarters on NH-39 yesterday.
On the other hand, the building constructed by the Government with the initial purpose of housing the proposed Highway Protection Force at Taphou in Senapati district has been turned into a cattle shed.
According to the people associated with the vehicle, some unidentified persons descended on the spot where the oil tanker was parked, following a mechanical breakdown, and set it on fire yesterday evening at about 6 .
The fire has caused extensive damages to the engine of the oil tanker but the tank containing the kerosene oil was saved following the timely arrival of the police and Fire Brigade.
The oil tanker has been stranded at the said spot since May 9 following a mechanical breakdown.
The owner of the vehicle has been established as one Ganesh Prasad of Motbung.
According to some persons associated with the vehicle, some unidentified persons same to the spot and after confiscating the documents of the vehicle as well as the keys, left and told them to come to Senapati district headquarters on May 12 .
Police said that they still do not know who was or were behind the act of setting the vehicle on fire.
The documents and keys of the vehicle have however been recovered from some elements, they added.
A case has also been registered.
On the other hand the building constructed to house the proposed Highway Protection Force at Taphou has been turned into a cattle shed.
Earlier the building was used by the 9 Manipur Rifles.
