Imphal, June 10 2011:
After the series of multi-trading scam, involving down lines and direct investment with the promise of huge returns, that has left a number of people poorer and some prospectors richer by lakhs of rupees, it is now a Quiz Scam, that has emerged with the manager of an NGO walking away with all the money collected for a Mega Quiz leaving the others in the lurch.
The matter came to light when the staff of the NGO, Bright Star Organisation (BSO), located near the post office at Porompat, decided to spill the beans today.
The manager, Kangjam Govind alias Tenoi of Heingang Makha Leikai has done the disappearing act after collecting a huge amount of money in the name of organising a Mega Quiz.
Giving the details, the Relationship Officer of the NGO, Sur Laishram said that the manager came up with the grand idea of organising a Mega Quiz 2011 and Mega Individual Contest this month and a huge amount of money was collected from the intending candidates.
An advertisement was even placed in a local paper, said Sur.
The staff of the NGO were pressed into service and after contacting numerous schools from all over, including the hill districts altogether 1500 forms were sold.
A number of intending contestants had also submitted their names.
The competition was scheduled to be held in three phases on June 20, 27 and 30 under the preliminary round, mega preliminary and the grand finale.
However the manager of the NGO, Govind quietly slipped away on June 8 along with all the money collected through sale of forms as well as registration fees of the intending candidates.
Maibam Uttarani, who is working as the accountant at the NGO, said she had applied for a job at Self Employment Organisation (SEO), an NGO, as a receptionist, but she was appointed as the accountant in October 2010.Uttarani said she was informed by Govind that the Bright Star Organisation (BSO) was started as a unit of SEO.
Initially there were 57 employees at SEO but gradually most of them started leaving the NGO, said the lady accountant and added that a scheme, known as MPEG was started but it failed.
Under MPEG, an investor had to deposit only Rs 15 and receive Rs 2000 after 24 days.
The condition was that an investor had to engage at least 216 investors as their down lines.
Another employee of the BSO, field officer Chingangbam Bihari informed that Govind hired employees in four phases and charged anywhere between Rs 5 to 20 thousand per employee before their appointment.
With the manager now disappearing with all the money, BSO will not be in a position to conduct the Mega Quiz, said the employees and added that they will not be responsible for any eventuality.
The responsibility should be borne by Govind.
Not only has Govind disappeared with the money, but he also threatened some of the staff over the phone.
