Imphal, May 10:
Asserting that the very essence of democracy is the people's right to analyse, critique and object any plan or policy of the Government, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has decried the arrest of MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal on the charge of indulging in seditious activities.
A press release issued by the UCM claimed that the MAFYF president was only speaking against the statement of the leader of the Government which was allegedly invoked by emotions and sentiments.

It also reminded of the conspicuous silence maintained by the Chief Minister when he was received at Senapati in May last year with a festoon which reportedly read as, "Welcome to South Nagaland, Shree Ibobi Singh, Hon'ble CM, Manipur".
People have not forgotten the alleged comment of the Chief Minister, "it is a democratic country, they are only expressing their wish and desire", asserted the UCM.
The reported act of police baton charging MAFYF volunteers who were demanding unconditional release of Kangleipal at the gate of the Chief Minister's official residence yesterday is another evidence of the incumbent Government's lack of any regard for democracy and its principles, it alleged.
It would not be any exaggeration to say that this incident amounts to law enforcing agencies trampling upon democracy at the very gate of the Chief Minister's office.
The UCM further appealed to the leaders of the State to work out a means for political dialogue rather than encouraging gun culture so that peace can be restored in the land.
Meanwhile, a MAFYF release informed that in support of its ongoing movement against the arrest of Kangleipal relay hunger strikes were staged at Nongada, Tuisenphai and Maphi Happy Land in Imphal East district and at Uripok of Imphal West district today.
Moreover, 30 volunteers sustained similar agitation at the SYDA Club ground in Sagolband.
The hunger strike had begun yesterday and would continue till Kangleipal is released.
