MTU gets intellectual property right cell

Manipur Technical University on Thursday opened its Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Cell and concurrently held a one-day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights.
The IPR Cell was opened with the initiative of Patent Information Centre, Manipur Science & Technology Council (MASTEC), Takyel under the supervision of Patent Facilitation Centre (PIC), Technology Infor mation Forecasting & Assessment Council, Depart of Science & Technology (TIFAC), Government of India, said an IPR Cell MTU release.
The event was attended by education minister Th Basanta Kumar Singh, Science and Technology minister Th Biswajit, MTU vice chancellor Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram, MASTEC commissioner (S&T) & member secretary Devesh Deval, commissioner (education) Mangsatabam Harekrishna, head of PIC TIFAC Dr Yashawant Dev Pawar, former IPAB chairman in-charge Dr BP Singh, and MASTEC director Dr L Minaketan Singh.
Also present were MASTEC officials and staffers, faculties, and over 250 students and startup beneficiaries of MTU incubation cell sponsored by the state planning department.
According to the release, the objectives of the MTU IPR Cell are to work as a link and bridge between PIC Manipur and institution/university and its affiliated colleges, to advise and guide the researchers on the basics of IPR, especially patents helped by PIC, if necessary, to arrange meetings in small groups of faculty members along with PIC officers for identifying patentable inventions, to encourage faculty members to carry out patent searches in-house and/or at PIC and to fine-tune their researches, to facilitate clearance from the competent authority for filing patent applications through PIC, and to forward cases of their IP protection to PIC.
In his address, education minister Th Basanta Kumar encouraged the students to take a cue from many Manipuri diaspora working in the country and abroad with good research works, and he congratulated the MTU vice chancellor for his great track records after joining the MTU.
Science & technology minister Biswajit stressed the importance and need for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag of Manipur's local products and commended the PIC MASTEC while suggesting to explore more on GI patent around the state.
The minister also handed over an amount of Rs 20,000 for maintenance of the Cell to Kosygin Leishangthem, nodal officer MTU IPR Cell.
MTU vice chancellor Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram while thanking the dignitaries for their presence appealed to MTU faculties and students to work sincerely and do remarkable research in their respective fields of engineering and science for Manipur.
After the formal event, a one-day workshop of IPR chaired by the MTU vice chancellor was held.
During the workshop, Dr Yashawant Dev Pawar, head of PIC TIFAC (science & technology dept), spoke on the topic "Harnessing Intellectual Property in Technical Institutions" while Dr BP Singh, former IPAB chairman in-charge Dr BP Singh, focussed on "Patenting System in India and Abroad" .
