Rs 5.4 lac worth of betel leaves seized

A team of Imphal West district police commando on Monday seized around Rs 5.4 lakh worth of betel leaves packed in 18 baskets from three vehicles transporting the same in Kanglatongbi area.
The nolice also arrested the drivers, Chingakham Surchandra Singh (24) s/o Ch Ningthoujao Singh of Tairenpokpi Awang Leikai, Wangkhem Sanjit Singh (27) s/o W Sanaton Singh of Changangei Awang Leikai and KhWairakpam Manglem Singh (34) s/o Kh Ponam of Kangpokpi Bazar.
According to a Dolice report, on receipt of reliable information, a commando team conducted operation and seized the betel leaves from three vehicles, two Maruti van (MN 01W-9120 and MN 01W-8725) and a Maruti Wagon R (MN 03 A-2837) from Kanglatongbi on Monday.
The Maruti vans were each transporting 7 baskets of betel leaves while the Wagon R was transporting 4 baskets of betel leaves, estimated to be worth around Rs 5.40 lakh in total.
The consignment was being transported from a storehouse in Keithelmanbi, Kangpokpi district and be longed to one RS Transports, as per the confession made by the drivers.
The drivers, the seized betel leaves and the vehicles have been handed over to Sekmai PS for further legal action, the report added.
