Fitting tributes paid to Rani Gaidinliu

The 109th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu was commemorated at various places across the state on Friday.
Manipur Governor Anu-suiya Uikey along with chief minister N Biren Singh, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker, ministers and MLAs paid homage to the freedom fighter by offering floral tributes to the statue of Rani Gaidinliu at Rani Gaidinliu Park, Mantripukhri.
Kabui Union Manipur also observed the birth anniversary Rani Gaidinliu at Keishamthong Kabui Khul community hall.
According to a release, the function which was presided over by Kabui Union Manipur president K Heera Kabui was attended by Kabui customary president Kamson Gangmumei as chief guest.
Remembering the freedom fighter on the occasion, Heera Kabui said that Rani Gaidinliu, who was born on January 26, 1915 in Lungkao Kabui Khul under Tousem sub-division dedicated her life for protecting the customs and traditions of Kabui under the leadership of Hapou Jadonang from the age of 13 years.
She was arrested by the British when she was 14 years old for waging war against the British.
Recognising her contribution to the freedom struggle, the then prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi conferred her "Tamra Patra Award" in the year 1972.She was also conferred the Padma Bhushan award in 1983 along with releasing a 1-rupee postal stamp in her honour.
The function was also attended by members of Kabui Union Manipur and general public.
Floral tributes were also paid as a mark of respect to the freedom fighter.
The 109th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu was also organised jointly by Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi and Zeliangrong Students Union, Delhi.
In a release, Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi said that the function which was organised virtually paid homage to the freedom fighter by offering floral tributes in addition to observing 1 minute silence as a mark of respect to Rani Gaidinliu.
