Loan waiver for handloom weavers

Both the State and Central Governments have agreed to waive off all the loans taken by handloom weavers and handloom weavers' cooperatives societies of the State.
An official source informed that loans taken by handloom weavers would be waived off under the Centre's handloom weavers revival package.
Under this package, a total loan amount of Rs four crores taken by handloom weavers would be waived off.
A joint meeting of bank officials, Handloom officials and NABARD officials was held today with Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industries) O Nabakishore in the chair.
Of the total loan amounts which would be waived, 90 per cent would be borne by the Centre and the remaining 10 per cent by the State Government.
The State Government has already sanctioned its share of Rs 43 lakhs.
Meanwhile, it is reported that 15 entrepreneurs of the State would take part in the Chennai Handloom Expo which would be organised by the Handloom Export Promotion Council from March 5 to 7 .
The State participants would be given subsidy of Rs 30,000 each by the State Government.
