Imphal, November 08 2018:
Following the Forest Department initiatives to study the migratory root of Amur Falcon by tagging Satellite radio to the migratory bird on November 5, District Administration has prohibited the use of Airgun in Tamenglong district in a bid to protect the migratory birds.
The initiative was taken up to protect Amur Falcon which is known as Akhoipuina in Kabui dialect from hunting and other threats.
The two Amur Falcons which have been named Tamenglong and Manipur after tagging Satellite radios by a team of scientists from Germany and Wildlife Institute of India along with Hungarian Raptor Biologist are reportedly taking shelter in nearby villages of Irang river and Barak river.
A public notice issued by Tamenglong DC Ravinder Singh also mentioned that killing of such migratory bird is punishable by law.
The notification also mentioned the prohibition of Airgun in Tamenglong district.
Encouraging the Balok villagers to help in preserving/protection the said migratory bird, which travelled a great distance to reach Tamenglong district by providing shelters, Balok village has been declared Amur Falcon village by the Forest Department.
Even a festival known as Amur Falcon festival is held annually to encourage the people in doing more works for Amur Falcon.
The bird in its short stay also helps humans by preying on rats and various insects/pests which are not beneficial to human.
