Protest staged, memo submitted over drug issue

Protesting against smuggling of drugs into the State, a sit-in-protest demonstration was staged at the market shed of Khuyathong today.
Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the protest demonstration organized under the aegis of under the aegis of Working Group of Meira Paibi Women, its Convenor L Memchoubi stated that the Central and the State Governments should not remain silent over the increasing cases of drug seizures in the State wherein even an Army officer has been caught red-handed.
All the drug traffickers should be given befitting punishment to deter others from indulging in the illegal trade.
She pointed out that people of Manipur particularly the youths are being made to drown in the flood of drugs.
They are being slowly taken over by drugs and this needs to stop at all cost.
As such, the State Government needs to be proactive in checking smuggling of drugs into the State.
On the other hand, expressing serious concern over rising cases of drug trafficking in the State, various women organisations of the State have jointly submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister O Ibobi pressing him to take up stern actions against the arrested drug smugglers.
Volunteers of 15 women groups today thronged at the gate of Chief Minister's bungalow at 1:30 pm.
However, they were dispersed by the police.
But later on four of them were allowed to enter gate and submit the memorandum to the Chief Minister.
The points highlighted in the memorandum included prohibition of transporting drugs through air cargo, punishment of drug smugglers in accordance to the law of the land, not to hide the powerful leaders involved in drug smuggling, giving reward to the police personnel who managed to seized drug consignments and awarding capital punishment to Colonel Ajay Chowdhry, Saikholen Haokip and five others who were arrested by police in connection with the drug haul at Pallel.
