Imphal, November 04 2012:
A one-day seminar on Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 was held today at Santhel Mamang Government Jr High Madrassa, Thoubal district under the aegis of the Organisation for Development and Youth Parallel Mind Group in commemoration of Sharmila completing 12th year of her crusade against the infamous Act.
The seminar was attended by social workers Md Rahimuddin, Md Assad Ali, Md Abdul Latif and Md Basiruddin as presidium members.
Speaking at the seminar, Delhi University PhD scholar S Rojesh asserted that the basic purpose of AFSPA seemed to be subjugation of Manipuri people.
Rojesh remarked that even though the Government of India imposed AFSPA in the North East region on the pretext of it being disturbed areas, the Act has been multiplying the state of turmoil in the region, more so in Manipur.
Indian leaders were aware that Manipuri people would one day revolt against the Indian regime for Manipuri have their own identity, culture and history.
That was why AFSPA was imposed in Manipur well before there was any organised armed rebellion in the State.

Whereas Manipur is politically a part of India, Manipuri people have not been granted the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
Though different sections of Indian people have expressed objection against AFSPA, no organised and sustained movement which can successfully effect abolition of the Act can be launched till date.
The Government of India's decision of abolishing POTA while keeping AFSPA is a clear indication that the people of North East region are not seen as equal citizens of India.
The whole India shook when Anna Hazare fasted for a few days against corruption but no proper coverage has been given in national media about Sharmila's 12 year long fasting against AFSPA , Rojesh lamented.
