Two Government colleges are to be struck off from among the 14 colleges proposed for elevating to the status of full-fledged Government institutions.
The State Government has taken a tentative decision in this regard and the necessary works have been initiated to upgrade only 12 Government with one time Central assistance, disclosed a top official of Higher Education Department to The Sangai Express today.
The decision to strike off two colleges from the earlier proposal of upgrading 14 colleges was taken following instruction from Planning Commission of India, the official added.
The 12 colleges which will be upgraded are Kakching College, Thoubal College, CI College, Moirang College, Imphal College, Modern College and DM College of Science and five other colleges located in the headquarters of the Hill districts.
Under the one time Central assistance, each of the 12 colleges would be provided Rs 1.50 crores for development, the official said, adding that the Planning Commission has revised the amount of fund provided for college development.
Earlier Rs 2 crores were provided for the purpose.
Informing that the State Government has also taken up measures for improving the standard of higher education in the State, the official said that strong instructions have been given to all the authorities concerned not to allow any students who do not maintain 75 per cent attendance from appearing in the examination.
All the college principals have also been asked to submit report every month on the progress of the college to the Commissioner of Education (U) with effect from January, 2005, the official further informed.
In accordance with the decision of Rationalisation Committee formed with the objective of rationalising college teachers, efforts would be taken up to find out the position of the college teachers in Manipur.
After knowing the exact number of college teachers, the process of rationalisation would commence, the source said informing that the matter has been discussed thoroughly during a meeting of the Rationalisation Committee.
It may be noted here that State Government has already approved the Rationalisation Policy formulated with a view to step up the process of rationalising college teachers.
To ensure implementation of the policy, a nine-member Task Force with Additional Director of Education (U) too has been set up.
Moreover, to improve the standard of education in colleges of Manipur, a 13-member State Level Quality Assurance Co-ordination Committee with Chief Minister as chairman and Commissioner of Higher Education as vice-chairman has also been formed on November 5 last under the guidance of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
