Imphal, August 09 2023:
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has categorically stated that not convening the special session of the State Assembly when Manipur is literally burning would be very wrong.
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 81st anniversary of Quit India Movement at Congress Bhavan today.
Speaking as the chief guest of the commemorative programme, O Ibobi continued that the Government should convene the special Assembly session to possibly work out a solution and end the conflict in Manipur at the earliest.

It is the responsibility of the Government to make sure all members of the House attend the Assembly session even if it requires intervention of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, he added.
There is no reason why all the MLAs of the ruling party won't attend the Assembly session if there is explicit direction from the Central leaders, the former Chief Minister reasoned.
He continued that the Congress and other like minded parties have been urging the Governor and the Manipur Government to call an emergency Assembly session but to no avail.
To a query, he responded that the State unit of the BJP only asking the Prime Minister to withdraw Assam Rifles from Manipur just now despite being dissatisfied with the conduct of the paramilitary force all this time is meaningless.
Anyone can submit a memorandum so the MLAs of the ruling party must put constant effort to meet the Prime Minister and highlight the woes of the people to bring a lasting solution to the ongoing conflict, he added.
O Ibobi further said that the BJP had enough time to lodge a complaint against Assam Rifles to the Ministry of Home and the Prime Minister if they are not satisfied with the conduct of the paramilitary force in dealing with the conflict since the beginning.
Saying that the Congress always advocates non-violence, peaceful coexistence among all Indians and development of an egalitarian society, the former Chief Minister maintained "we should keep all our differences aside for peace to prevail" .
The former Chief Minister then appealed to leaders of both the parties in conflict to hold a dialogue and work out a solution in the larger interest of the people and the State instead of being hostile with one another.
Saying that the territorial integrity of Manipur, however, shouldn't be used as an appeasement policy under any circumstances, O Ibobi said there always will be alternative solutions to end the conflict without disintegration of Manipur and 'we must find it together' .
MPCC president K Meghachandra and CWC member Gaikhangam also attended the programme among others and they paid floral tributes to the freedom fighters of India.
