Imphal, April 03 2012:
A 3-day long National Seminar on Ethnography and Tribes in Colonial Northeast India being organised jointly by Department of History, Manipur University and Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi commenced at the Lecture Hall of the History Department, MU today.
The inaugural function was graced by Prof HNK Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University; M Jitendra, Head of Department, History, Manipur University and Prof N Lokendra, Registrar of Manipur University as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof HNK Sharma said that we need to discuss the history of Colonial Ethnography as written by great historians.
Only after fully understanding the Colonial Ethnography we will be able to find a way to live together peacefully.
He also pointed out that during the British Colonial rule, the British tried to understand the languages of the different tribes settling in different parts of the state.
Likewise, the Historians of the state should understand the culture and languages of different tribes while trying to bring out quality books related with the history of the region.
Prof N Lokendra also said that the seminar is quite important in trying to bring forward the historical aspects of the North East India.
Even politicians often refer to the history books written by scholars to shed light on the past incidents.
So, if at all, one is to write anything related to the history of a particular region, the writer should minutely study the sources.
Prof Nabakumar, Dr MC Arun and Colonel Jassal also spoke on different topics during the technical session.
