Imphal, August 27 2021:
Though the party is in alliance with BJP in the state, National People's Party (NPP) has always taken its own decision when it comes to state issues and interest of the general public, and the party will continue with the same tradition, said deputy chief minister Y Joykumar.
While inaugurating the party's Kshetrigao block office at Kshetri Awang Leikai under Kshetrigao assembly constituency on Friday, Joykumar said that the party will always take its own independent decision whenever needed even if it is an ally of the BJP-led government in the state.
As an alliance partner, NPP respects BJP but that does not necessarily mean that the party will endorse every decision of BJP.
The same stand was displayed when NPP president Conrad Sangma took his stand against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The party will always stick to its main objective of uniting the north east states and working in the region's best interest, he added.
There are several issues in northeast region such as inter-state boundary rows and these issues have been the roadblock in bringing development in the region.
The party was formed with the objective to resolve such issues and bring unity and development in the region.
Problems of the region cannot be resolved by those in Delhi but by those in the region, he added.
Joykumar further said that unlike BJP and Congress, there is no high command in NPP.
Party president Conrad Sangma is from Meghalaya and they can meet him anytime.
He is also the vice president of the party and there are many differences between NPP and other national parties, Joykumar said.
He also expressed firm belief that the party will win more seats in the forthcoming state assembly election and it will play a major role in forming the next government in the state.
The party accepts intending candidates as new members after assessing their probability of winning the election.
Among them, Nurul Hassan is a highly educated person and his works so far are highly satisfactory which is why he was appointed as general secretary (organisation) of the party.
He is a valuable asset of the party, Joykumar said.
NPP working president L Jayantakumar said that the English proverb "The morning shows the day" could be applied to the party after assessing the new members who would be contesting the forthcoming election on NPP tickets.
There are several unresolved issues in the state and the state needs young and new faces in politics and governance in order to resolve these issues.
It is not contractors or businessmen turned politicians that the state needs but people with the true motive and commitment of serving the people and the society for a better change, he said.
On the other hand, people of different communities first need to understand the strength and necessity of unity in order to bring development and resolve issues that have been haunting the state for long.
Communal sentiments and divisions will not bring development, he added.
Sheikh Nurul Hassan, who would be contesting the forthcoming state assembly election as NPP candidate from Kshetrigao AC, said that NPP has become a popular party in the state.
The party will win a significant number of seats in the election next year and play an important part in the formation of the government, he opined and appealed to the people of both hills and valley and different communities to support the party for an inclusive development and economic growth.
Intending candidates of the party Chungkham Bijoy of Patsoi AC, Laitonjam Jayananda of Khurai AC, Huidrom Vikram of Yaiskul AC, Oinam Romen of Singjamei AC, U Romesh of Mayang Imphal AC, NPP general secretary Russel Heisnam and NPP Kshetrigao block president Abdul Gaffar were also present at the function.
