Present electoral system outdated: Dr Nara

Conceding that late parliamentarian and communist leader Bhupesh Gupta was one of those who endorsed proportional electoral system in the country, Dr M Nara, secretary of CPI Manipur State Council asserted that proportional electoral system should be implemented in the country in place of the existing system to facilitate selection of competent people's representatives.
He was attending the birth centenary of Bhupesh Gupta organized by Agitation & Propaganda Department, CPI Manipur State Council at Irabat Bhavan, BT Road here today.

Speaking as presidium member, Dr Nara said that Bhupesh Gupta was a dedicated communist leader who had always worked for welfare of the people especially farmers and maintained that the late leader also took part in the world communist movement.
The electoral system which is now outdated and police reform being implemented in India were introduced by the British during their rule in the country.
The proportional electoral system is far much better as people will have the flexibility at the time of selecting leaders under the system, he pointed out.
Maintaining that every election should be held in free and fair manner devoid of muscle and money power, Dr Nara said that it is high time for CPI party to strengthen its position in the State.
During the function, L Sotinkumar, general secretary of AITUC spoke on life history of Bhupesh Gupta.
B Sharma, former secretary of CPI Manipur State Council; L Thoiren, assistant state secretary of the party and Athokpam Lala, former secretariat member of the party were also present at the occasion as presidium members.
