Imphal, March 15 2018:
Federation of Farmer Clubs, Manipur, Langthabal Lep Awang Leikai has made a fervent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make an announcement of loan waiver for farmers (Kisaan Credit Card loans) during his visit to the State tomorrow in view of the untold grievances faced by the farmers due to the floods occurred in last year.
Addressing a press meet held today at Manipur Press Club, president of the federation Kh Ranjit said that farmers in the State are reeling under huge debts as their crops and fish farms were damaged by the spate of floods in last year.
He said that many farmers have been finding it hard to pay off the loans credited from banks through Kisaan Credit Cards.
Given the condition, the aggrieved farmers are hoping that the Prime Minister during his visit to the State would make an announcement of loan waivers for them, he added.
He reiterated that the farmers club had requested the Chief Minister repeatedly, including twice in Meeyamgi Numit to waive the farmers loans.
Ranjit regretted that the authority concerned does not take up any significant step to waive the loan till date leaving the farmers in the lurch.
Although the Chief Minister declared the floods occurred in last year as State calamity, farmers in the State, who have been the most affected group by the floods do not receive anything so far, he said.
Noting that there is a need to address plight of farmers in the State by both the Central and State Government if they are working sincerely towards the vision of doubling the farmers' income by 2022, he observed that there cannot be inclusive development in the country if farmers are taken lightly.
He expressed optimism that the Prime Minister would pay heed to their call and do the needful when he visits the State tomorrow.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Science Seminar at Manipur University.
He will also inaugurate few projects in the State-during his visit.
