World Kidney Day observed

World Kidney Day 2013 was widely observed in Manipur on Thursday with Sky Hospital and Research Centre here conducting a free health check up of blood pressure and diabetes tests to mark the day.
To commemorate the day, private hospital conducted free health check up like blood pressure and diabetes tests to about 100 persons at the hospital.
Fresh fruits like apple and watermelon were also distributed to kidney patients treating at the hospital.
This year's World Kidney Day was observed with the theme "Kidneys for Life, Stop Kidney Attack!" around the globe.
Dr L Shyamkishore, chairman, Sky Hospital and Research Centre attending the function organized by the hospital, said the common causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure.
He said using excess amount of pain killer drugs without doctor's advice is also one of the major causes of kidney disease.
Diabetes is also one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, he said and added that it is important that people with diabetes have their kidney checked regularly and that any problems to be treated as soon as possible to prevent or delay further damage.
He also said one in every four adults suffers from high blood pressure and combination of high blood pressure and kidney disease is very common.
"High blood pressure is often called the "silent disease" because a person can have it without knowing," Dr Shyamkishore added.
Every year in world, about 30 percent of kidney patients die of acute kidney injury, he updated.
