Imphal, April 03 2012:
A documentary film of half an hour's length depicting the deplorable condition of the National Highway 37 (NH-53 previously) connecting Imphal to Jiribam will be shown to the Prime Minister of India by a team comprising the president and secretary of the National Highway 53 Truck Owners Association and representatives of the truck drivers' union plying on this highway.
The team left Imphal on Tuesday for Delhi, after interacting with the media, to highlight the deplorable condition of the highway which is under the care of the Border Road Organisation (BRO).
The BRO had assured the government of Manipur that black-topping work of the highway would be completed by the year 2013, but till now only about 60% of the work has been completed while the worst 40% of the highway is yet to be completed, stated Kh.
Inaoba Meitei, president of the truck owners association.
Inaoba said that the BRO had given the assurance to complete black-topping work of the highway to the works minister of the previous government, K.Ranjit, in his office chamber last year in which the truck owners association had offered to lift the material required for the work on payment, but BRO officials had refused the offer though the main reason given by the BRO for the slow progress of the work has been said to be the shortage of material for the work.
He added that the association had gone with a team of media persons to check the progress of the work along this road in April 2011 in which they had found that only 10 persons were working near Nungdolan, which is one the worst stretch along this road, contrary to the claim of the BRO that full strength of workers have been employed along the highway.
He wondered if the work can be finished by 2013 as half of the working season is already over before the rain sets in.
In connection with the slow progress of the work along this road, which is the life-line of the state of Manipur connecting it to the rest of the country, a memorandum will also be submitted to the prime minister to draw his attention to the matter and expedite the progress of the work of the BRO, stated the president of the truck owners association.
