Shillong, October 20 2013:
The Mukul Sangma government has taken up stringent measures to thwart the 36 hours Meghalaya bandh to be imposed by militant outfit HNLC from 6 am of Monday.
The Meghalaya government has asked the people to ignore the bandh and carry on with their normal chores.
Besides the state government, there are some organisations decided to oppose the bandh.
The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) calls the 36 hour Meghalaya shut-down boycotting the visit of President of India Pranab Mukherjee to the state.
Today, the HNLC has reiterated that the bandh is in protest against the ill treatment of the government of India to the state.
"This stand was taken in order to confront the lackadaisical attitude of the Indian government to hold peace talks with the HNLC in order to resolve the Hynniewtrep national question.
The situation today is the result of the egoistic attitute of the Congress leaders.
The government should take up the responsibility of this entire unrest in the Hynniewtrep land.
HNLC is standing upon the principle of preserving the people of Hynniewtrep and their land from the clutches of the government of India," HNLC information secretary Saikupar Nongtraw said today.
It can be noted here that earlier, the Informed Conscious and Responsible Existence (ICARE) had said it would oppose the HNLC bandh saying bandhs affect the poor section of the society the most.
"In an underdeveloped state like Meghalaya, calling bandhs will severely affect the people to a great extent negatively," said ICARE.
"We have enough forces.
we have mobilized and there is no cause for worry," Meghalaya chief secretary WMS Pariat said.
President of India Pranab Mukherjee's two days visit to Meghalaya will begin from October 21 for the North Eastern Hill University convocation ceremony and others programmes.
Few days ago, the HNLC had said the collective leadership of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council in its recent high command emergency meeting had expressed its sheer anger over the Indian political leadership, which is responsible for all the crises that have hindered the overall development of the entire Hynniewtrep land.
"The government of India has completety turned a blind eye towards the welfare of our nation, our people, our resources are being exploited by these same political leaders, who are luring the people by giving away schemes which in turn benefits the political leaders.
Time and again the Government has proved that it is not for the people, but for itself," the HNLC stated.
According to the HNLC, the issue of influx has always been diverted and neglected because these same political leaders are being manipulated and economically controlled by the non-tribals.
It said these non tribals are exploiting the entire Hynniewtrep land on the behest of the indian political leaders.
For the last few decades we have seen that the issue of influx, the boundary issue, the encroachment of land by security forces are not at all taken seriously by these so called 'People representatives'.
The whole Indian political system is a nuisance, it is on meant for its selfish motives.
The political leaders are only there, to serve the interests of its party and not its people, the HNLC stated.
"The HNLC since its inception has never had trust in the governmenment of India nor the indian political leadership. We have taken up arms to fight the political will of the indian government and we will keep on doing so.
In the eve of raising day on August 14, 2013 HNLC's general secretary had issued a statement expressing the willingness of the council to start up unconditional talks with the central Government, but no response was shown.
This step-motherly attitude of the government has infact boomeranged and made our determination stronger day by day," the outfit added.
It then said the confronting attitude of the state government in hunting for several NGOs leaders is a Shame, Shame on the Indian unconstitutional democratic system that is being boasted world wide.
The Constitution has rather taken shape of an institution which is run and governed by political, diplamatic and bureaucratic corrupts.
The Congress led government is infact compelling more youths to take up arms and sort out for solution.
The council would also like to remind the people of Hynniewtrep, that oct 21st is being observed as the 25th death anniversary of Syiem Wickliff(founder of Hynniewtrep Nationalism) And the planned visit of Pranab Mukherjee is a political insult to the Hynniewtrep National Day, the HNLC stated.
"The Hynniewtrep Kings and his Durbars Hima had never accepted nor agreed, they were very much opposed to signing the instrument of Accession and Anexed Agreement 1948 but were helpless at that point of time as, under duress and with guns pointed at them, they had no other way but to sign the same.
As a mark of political protest against the two days visit of Pranab Mukherjee on the Hynniewtrep land, the council declares a 36 hours bandh in the entire Hynniewtrep commencing from6 am of October 21 to 6 pm of October 22 .
During these hours, essential services, emergency measures, media and religious activities are exempted from the purview of the bandh," the HNLC announced.
