Guwahati, July 10 2009: An Assam Rifles major and a jawan were arrested on charges of kidnapping a college student from Titabor in Jorhat district last night.

A 9mm pistol, one .32 pistol, ammunition, a pair of handcuffs, a laptop and a cellphone were seized from them.

Sarvana Binud and rifleman Wangkhem Ramesh Singh of the 3 Assam Rifles based in Manipur, were booked under Sections 365 (kidnapping) and 307/34 (attempt to murder, common intention) under the IPC and the Arms Act.

Both were sent to judicial custody this evening after being produced in the chief judicial magistrate's court, Jorhat.

Debashish Bora, sub-divisional police official, said the duo came to Titabor around 9pm and asked an employee of a hotel at Titabor Tinali, Bhargav Khound, to call Debabrata Bordoloi, a boarder at the number 3 hostel of Pragjyotika Junior College located in the vicinity.

"When Debabrata came out to meet the visitors, the defence personnel forced him into the Maruti Alto in which they had come and sped away towards Dimapur along Dhodar Ali," Bora said.

Debabrata, a Class XII student of the college, however, managed to jump out of the car at Amgurikhat, about 5km from Titabor, and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of the local residents who immediately informed the police.

"The major and the rifleman, both in civvies, fled from the scene but their vehicle was intercepted at Kamarbandha police outpost after an alert was sent out," the police official said.

Vinod Chetia, the officer in-charge of Titabor police station, said Debabrata revealed that the major had questioned him about his affair with a particular girl student of the college and also threatened to kill him for having a relationship with her.

"It could be a triangular love affair which led to the Assam Rifles official attempting to kidnap the boy.

We will interrogate the girl whose name Debabrata had taken.

Only then the truth may come to light," the official said.

Chetia said that Maj.

Binud, who hails from Chennai, had maintained that he received regular missed calls on his cell phone from Debabrata and had come to check why the latter was doing it.

"But we are sure the Assam Rifles official is hiding something," the OC said.

He added that Maj.

Binud, although based in Manipur, had come to Dimapur a few days back on official duty.

Asked how an Assam Rifles officer based in Manipur could be having an affair with a student in Titabor, Chetia said, "In the days of mobile phones and Internet, everything is possible".

While Debrabrata hails from Sivasagar, the girl, who also stays in the college hostel, is from Tinsukia district.
