Ukhrul, May 26 2012:
Two vehicles were reportedly damaged between Ramva village and Finch Corner today by bandh supporters enforcing the 36-hour hills blockade being imposed by Indira Gandhi National Tribal Students' Union, Regional Campus Manipur (IGNTUSU-RCM) in all the hill districts of Manipur including the two National Highways with effect from 5 a.m
today.
The bandh has been called to protest the current recruitment drive for various posts for Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur, which the students' union said is against the memorandum of understanding signed between the IGNTU and the students' body on October 24, 2011 wherein it was agreed that no recruitment would be done for Regional Campus Manipur until the reservation policy is settled.
The IGNTUSU's demand has been officially endorsed by All Colleges Tribals Students' Organisatioon, Manipur (ACTSOM), Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU), Thadou Students' Association, Chandel district, and Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) .
On Saturday afternoon, the ACTSOM bandh volunteers damaged a Bolero jeep and Tata Magic van between Ramva village and Finch Corner about 20-km from Ukhrul town for defying the blockade call.
"The two vehicles were damaged after they forcefully passed through despite our appeal," justified the bandh enforcers.
It may be mentioned that today is the third day in which normal life was affected in Manipur by bandhs.
Normal life was also affected in many parts of Manipur on Thursday and Friday due to a 48-hour bandh called by scheduled caste students of Manipur to protest the government's failure to pay the post matric scholarship of scheduled caste students for 2010-2011 .
