Ensure rights of Loktak dependents: CPI unit

Thanga Local Council, CPI has demanded the government to ensure the rights of people who are depending on Loktak Lake for their livelihood.
In a release, Thanga Local Council, CPI secretary Moirangthem Mangi Singh said that party's local council always welcomed every initiative for protecting and developing Loktak Lake.
However, the issue of Loktak Lake pollution and shrinkage of space for Sangai was not there prior to the Loktak project but problems multiplied with the commissioning of Loktak project.
While pointing out that most of the people of Thanga AC are indulging in fishing by staying in Loktak Lake, he said that their source of income has been disrupted as setting of fish traps in.
the lake has been prohibited, thereby causing immense trouble in maintaining their family.
Though setting of fish traps has been halted, Mangi urged to allow the traditional practice of maintaining artificial biomass (phumdi) during the lean fishing season.
Exhorting the authorities concerned not to impose prohibition on the Home Stays set up as a means of livelihood by educated unemployedyouth, he further appealed to ensure rights of people living in land areas including Keibul, Chingmei, Chandapur, Moirang Khunou, Keirel Phabi, Thanga Lawai, Kumbi Pat, Khordak and Nongmaikhong village by allowing them to continue their works in agriculture, fishing and horticulture activities to sustain livelihood.
He maintained that people living in nearby areas have been protecting and preserving 'Sangai' and they will continue to do so in future.
