Imphal, August 16 2022:
Fisheries minister Heikham Dingo has asserted that the State government is trying its level best to increase the fish production of the state.
Speaking as chief guest of the inauguration of a 5-day national training programme on "Classical Freshwater Fish Taxonomy", which is being organised jointly by Department of Zoology, Manipur University and ICAR- Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal at MU Court Hall on Tuesday, minister H Dingo informed that steps to preserve different varieties of fish have been taken up in the hill districts.
Stressing the need to conserve the indigenous fishes of the state, which are both nutritious and preferred by the people of the state, he also called for concerted efforts to increase the fish production in the state so as to stop bringing in fishes from outside, thereby not only helping to improve the state's economy but also allowing people to consume fishes which are both tasty and beneficial to health.
Speaking on the occasion, MU Zoology Department assistant professor Dr Ra-meshori Yumnam pointed out that providing taxonomy training will aid in the experimental and biological research of varied fish species.
She then said that reduced attention on fish taxonomy has led to low research on fishes.
Thus, there is the need to study freshwater fishes, particularly for preservation purposes, she asserted.
The inaugural function was also attended by MU vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh and National Wetland Committee member Prof W Vishwanath Singh.
In all, 25 trainees along with experts from and outside Manipur are participating in the training programme.
As a part of the training programme, a manual on the Identification of Fishes of Eastern Himalayas, edited by Dr Rameshori Yumnam was released.
