Imphal, December 17 2023:
Even though Keibi has been declared a model village, people of Keibi Khullen which is at a distance of about 17.9 km north of Imphal city, has been longing for better roads and educational facilities.
This tiny village having a total household of 300 and population of 1400, has a total geographical area of 248.56 hectares.
The roads passing through the village are in a highly dilapidated condition, consequently creating serious inconvenience to the local populace.
The repairing of roads had started but left incomplete.
Moreover, the Keibi Khullen Primary School which was set up in 1948 is now defunct with no student and teacher.
As the school compound has no fencing the same has been turned into a grazing ground for cattle.
In addition, water from the Kabowrou Lokchao which serves as the main source for various purposes, has now dried up and as such the villagers are facing shortage of water.
There are no proper canals forcing the villagers to depend solely on rain water for irrigation.
Some of the villagers use underground water for irrigation purposes.
Nevertheless, various activities are being taken up in the Keibi model village which serve as a means of livelihood for the villagers.
Some villagers are also taking up activities to conserve water and fertile soil flowing down from hills during rainy season in their personal capacity.
Since the last 5 years, watershed component management works are being taken up by Integrated Water Management Programme (IWMP), Imphal East district as an umbrella scheme of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY).
The management work is being taken up at the Kabowrou Lokchao which is at a distance of about 2 km from the Keibi Khullen main road.
Gabion structure activities are also being taken up around Kabowrou Lokchao under the watershed component development works.
Drains are also constructed to conserve the fertile soils brought down by the stream from the hills during rainy seasons.
These drains and ponds dug up will enable the soil to be deposited and water absorbed making only the excess water to drain away.
Brush Wood Check Afforestation and plantation of banana plants are also being taken up to control the flow of strong current water.
The Lanchenba farm is also taking up various activities including poultry and piggery farms in Keibi Sabal area which adds to the beauty of the model village.
The only thing needed to be developed is the condition of the roads and water facilities.
