Public urged to contribute in protecting environment

As part of the World Environment Day observance, Pherzawl Forest Division under the aegis of the district administration on Sunday organised a mass plantation drive at its camp office and across the district with active involvement of SP, CMO staff and other DLOs.
Speaking on the occasion, Pherzawl deputy commissioner Joseph Pauline Kamson pointed out that the day was a reminder of people's power at the grassroots and community level to bring about positive change in the environment.
Saying that all must shift from exploiting the planet to healing it, the DC exhorted the denizens to plant trees and conserve the environment.
Th Autumn, DFO Pherzawl, explained that shifting cultivation in steep hill slopes of the region resulted in landslides, ecological imbalance and soil erosion.
The DFO stressed the need of carrying out mass tree plantation on either side of Churachandpur-Tipaimukh Road, as vegetation cover will prevent occurrence of landslides/landslips.
He then invited all government employees, NGOs and villagers of the district to participate in the proposed mass tree plantation programme during this June and July.
Similar plantation drives will be carried out from Monday at different villages within Pherzawl district.
Bishnupur Forest Division also observed World Environment Day by organising a mass plantation drive at Maibam Lotpa Chingning Awang Leikai in Nambol.
Bishnupur deputy commissioner Lourembam Bikram, SP N Herojit Meitei, divisional forest officer (DFO) Dr Re-bika Soibam Chanu, village elders, youths, students, district forest officials and staff took part in the plantation drive.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Bikram informed that the goal of conservation is to regulate natural resources in a sustainable manner and expressed concern that exploit ing the environment by humans has led to climate change and ecological imbalance.
The DC advocated for conservation as a collective responsibility of each and every person for common good.
In his address, DFO Dr Rebika opined that modest yet concerted efforts by all will pave way to restore our vanishing forest covers and reduce global warming.
She then informed that the forest department will provide more seedlings to interested youth clubs and people interested in conservation of the environment in the future too.
Thoubal Forest Division along with various organisations also carried out mass tree plantation drives in different parts of the district as a part of observance of World Environment Day.
The district forest division along with RUDA Academy, Thoubal organised a mass tree plantation at Samu Manbi Ching Thoubal Khunou.
In the mass tree plantation drive, DFO Thoubal Th Lokendro, range officer Sh Shamungou, deputy range office L Dhananjoy and staff participated in the plantation drive.
Similar programmes were conducted at Lemba Khun and Inganglok.
PHED Thoubal also organised a mass tree plantation at Khongjom War Memorial Complex and cleaning of a river flowing through Heirok, Wangjing Tentha and Sangaiyumpham.
NYK Thoubal in collaboration with Youth Circle Moijing and YEDS Moijing also conducted a tree plantation and cleanliness drive at Idgah Park Moijing.
The drive participated by Abdul Warish, Pradhan Moijing GP and Konsam Lokendro Singh, DACYP member NYK Thoubal, concluded after planting 210 tree saplings in and around the Park.
The NYK also organised tree plantation at Salungpham along with Salungpham Youth Association and KK Academy.
Similar drive was organised at Lamding village bv SACA Club in the collaboration or NYK Thoubal.
