Imphal, August 20, 2012:
Women Environmental Protection Force (WEPF) conducted a workshop on 'Friendly Micro-organism and Environment with Special Reference to Solid Waste Management' at Classic Hotel, here today.
Participating in the workshop, Chairman of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) N Raghumani Singh observed that the issue of garbage is becoming a major problem in the city on account of ever increasing human population and called upon all the residents of Imphal City to call IMC before throwing the leftovers of feasts.
"In early days, the problems of waste management were minimal.
However, as the population increases the number of religious feasts, ceremonies were also increasing day by day.
But, the mindless disposal of leftovers at nearby roadside is becoming a common phenomenon; it makes the surrounding dirty.
Instead of throwing it around, please call IMC and we are here to collect and dispose them at a far off place," Raghumani said.
Pointing out that "Bazar No1 (Purana Bazaar) is one of the dirtiest place", he contended that illegal occupation of market place, selling of fish and cooking inside the market place has made the bazaar dirty.
Expressing concern over wastes from hospitals and private clinics; Raghumani pointed out that there is the need to take prior permission from the authorities concerned by the owners of the private hospitals and clinics before establishing premises.
Director of Environment and Ecology Wing, Govt.of Manipur, Dr M Homeshore Singh noted that the population of Imphal city is now at around 5 lakh and the problem of waste management is becoming a major concern for the department.
