Imphal, April 24 2012:
The differences in the status of elected members of the ADC and Panchayat members are quite irrational, exclaimed P Bimola, Adhakshya of Imphal East Zila Parishad.
She was speaking as Chief Guest on the occasion of 6th Panchayati Raj Day observance at Panchayat Bhawan, Porompat today.
Bimola pointed out that both Panchayat and ADC members have been elected by the people to take up development programmes of the state government at the grassroots level.
However, the step motherly treatment of the state government towards the members of Panchayat and giving all possible benefits including monthly salary, personal escorts to the ADC members are not acceptable and this practice should be stopped at once.
At the same time, Panchayat members should perform their duties efficiently.
Even though it would be hard to bring about an immediate change in the system, yet Panchayat members should come together and meet all the challenges and bring peace in the state, she added.
RK Dinesh, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East, who was also present on the occasion as Guest of Honour, observed that since the Panchayat members lack knowledge over functioning of the Panchayat, it creates problem while implementing the development works of the state government at the grass roots level.
So, awareness programmes should be conducted entirely for all the members
of Panchayats.
