Imphal, December 18 2019:
Left parties in the State, comprising of CPI, CPI, AIFB and RSP, have announced that they are all prepared to impose the 12 hour Statewide general strike (6 am to 6 pm) tomorrow as part of the Nationwide protest against Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.The Left parties also sought public support in the Statewide general strike while informing that many CSOs, political parties and womenfolk have assured the left parties of extending full cooperation and support in the general strike.
Briefing media persons at Irawat Bhawan, BT Road this evening, CPI, MSC secretary L Sotin Kumar conveyed that sit in protests will also be held at around 30 different places during the general strike to mark the stand against CAA.
Decrying BJP of implementing the CAA despite stiff opposition and protest in the North East and other parts of the country, he alleged that the purpose and intent of the BJP in bringing the CAA is to create/form a Hindu Rashtra and for the purpose of vote bank.
CAA is unconstitutional as it is against secularism which is enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
It also goes against the very essence of the spirit for India's unity and diversity.
As such, it provokes communal feelings among various communities in the country, he further alleged.
Talking about implementing Inner Line Permit System in Manipur, he observed that the said regulation is a different thing and should not be considered as a appropriate mechanism to defend against the adverse impact of CAA.
He maintained that Manipur and other States of the North East region will witness serious crisis of demographic imbalance in the years to come with the implementation of the amended Citizenship Act.
He also said that public, intellectuals and politicians in the State must view CAA with a far sighted vision and raise stiff opposition against the newly amended Citizenship Act.
