Tamenglong, September 14 2012:
The Zeliangrong Student's Union, Tamenglong District (ZSU-TD) has threatened to impose indefinitely economic blockade along National High 37 if its long pending demand for improvement of the roads in the district is not fulfilled within 30 days time.
The student body has also demanded location of a 5000 metric tonne capacity FCI godown in the district headquarters.
Submitting an ultimatum to the Prime Minister of India seeking immediate action for locating the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown and to improve the road conditions in Tamenglong district, the ZSU-TD said for quite a long time it has been drawing the attention of Union minister Dr M.M.Pallam Raju and several other Union Ministers, but no one has come forth to address the suffering of the people.
"It is needless to emphasis more about the dire necessity of locating the godown at Tamenglong district headquarters.
Out of 4 sub-divisions of the district, Tamenglong district headquarters supplies all the essential commodities to the three sub-divisions viz.
Tamenglong, Tamei and Tousem sub-division except Nungba sub-division which is linked by National Highway 37", claimed the student body in its memorandum.
On the condition of the state highways passed through the district, the memorandum highlighted the need for widening the existing highways immediately and pointed out that Tamenglong-Tousem-Haflong Road (91.95 km) has never been completed despite construction of the same by the State PWD for the past 30 years.
The Zeliangrong students' body then pointed out that the said road would serve as the second but the shortest inter-state highway with Assam.
In that case, Guwahati, the commercial centre of the North Eastern India can be brought much closer to the district and Imphal, the state capital and it would facilitate the entire population of Manipur to experience speedy economic development and prosperity in the state.
