Senapati village sets sight on 100 pc Covid vaccination

In an effort to save lives amid the rising Covid cases, Maram Centre village under Senapati district has started vaccinating all its adult population in the age group of 18 years and above from Tuesday onward.
The vaccination drive is being carried out under PHC, Maram with assistance of trained medical practitioners of the village.
Briefing media persons, Maram Centre Covid Task Force convener Alphones Daniel stated that the village is targeting to achieve 100 per cent Covid vaccination of its adult population.
"It is a very challenging task with the rumours being spread on social media about the efficacy of the Covid vaccine, discouraging many in the village.
However, under the able leadership of public leaders and the village authority along with mobilization from the village youth has enabled them to take this step," he said.
The Maram Centre village is reportedly one of the most vulnerable villages as the two NHs - Asian Highway-1 (NH-2) and NH-129 (A) (Maram-Peren Road) converge at Maram Centre with Don Bosco Hr Sec School, Don Bosco College, six private hostels run between two big battalions of Assam Rifles in the district.
The approximate population of the village stands at about 1200 and the convenor of village task force said that the village has achieved 30 per cent vaccination in the past and it is now targeting more than 90 per cent with the exception of some pregnant mothers and those who have allergies.
Around 700-800 people of the village are said to be in age group of 18 years and above.
The big task of the youth volunteers was to go house to house and lead them for vaccination.
Physically challenged people would be visited by a team of medical practitioners as confirmed by the villagers on the spot.
The message the villagers wanted to give to others is that the only way that one can help the government and the medical department to stop the virus is to get vaccinated and stay safe.
Dr Anthony, MO in-charge PHC Maram, informed that the first ever 100 per cent vaccination plan among the general populace in the state/district got underway under the initiative of the Maram Centre village leaders.
Different other villages and colonies have started approaching the PHC for the same.
In this connection, the MO in-charge lauded the responsible leaders of Maram Centre for their effort to vaccinate the entire adult population of the village.
The Don Bosco Hr Sec School principal, sisters, shopkeepers in the bazaar areas reportedly got the Covishield jab on the day.
The beneficiaries reported that they were fortunate to get vaccinated and expressed happiness to see a large turnout for the vaccination.
They said that they felt relieved and experienced no side effects after receiving their doses.
The MO in-charge said that AEFI kit was kept ready to administer those vaccinated in case they had any side effects post the vaccination.
There was no beneficiary reporting side effects.
Altogether, 370 beneficiaries were given the first dose of Covishield with one differently-abled person and one frontline worker for those above 18 years and 68 persons for those above 45 years.
While members of ADC Senapati were engaged in providing meals to all who are in different quarantine centres at Senapati, the Maram Centre villagers provided all requirements for those were quarantined at Don Bosco Hr Sec School, Maram Centre during the first wave last year.
The Maram Students' Union (MKS) lauded the activities undertaken by the villagers and the medical team for the vaccination.
The student body also visited PHC, Maram and was disappointed to find that the PHC was issued only one B-type oxygen cylinder without regulator and other essential equipment which are not ready for use.
MKS appealed to the authority concerned to immediately do the needful during these critical times.
