Imphal, August 02 2021:
The proscribed Coordination Committee (CorCom) has extended revolutionary honour to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who won the silver medal in 49kg category women's weightlifting at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics-2020 .
The outfit also bestowed the same honour to other Olympians from Manipur namely MC Mary Kom (boxing), Sushila Likmabam (Judo) and Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu and Shanglakpam Nilakanta (hockey), who considered Tokyo Olympics as a war field to showcase the tiny Manipur to the world and competed with their counterparts in the world's biggest sporting event.
It also applauded the grit and hard work of Olympians from WESEA region namely Lovlina Borgohain (boxing) of Assam, Lalremsiami (hockey) of Mizoram and Tarundeep Rai (archery) of Sikkim and their role in showcasing the region to the world in the ongoing Olympic Games.
Though independent countries of the world take part in the biggest and largest sporting events like the Olympic Games and players from these countries bring laurels for their motherland, players of Manipur and WESEA region could not do so for their motherland but have to play and bring glory in the name of India.
This is because Manipur and WESEA are under Indian administration and people of Manipur would have been happier had the players represented their own independent motherland in the world's biggest sporting event, a CorCom statement said, adding that success and glory of skilful and talented players of Manipur are being owned by India.
According to the CorCom statement issued by its publicity committee, Mirabai's success not only showcases the true identity and roots of tiny Manipur but also proved that it is impossible for a bigger and powerful country to always suppress smaller nation.
The success of Mirabai also instils courage to revolutionaries fighting to restore lost sovereignty apart from guiding revolutionary movement to a clearer path.
Apart from showcasing that hard work pays off, Mirabai's success in the Olympic Games makes it clear that people of Manipur particularly younger generation could succeed at the highest level if moulded properly in time.
However, Mirabai was not alone in achieving the feat and her seniors had contributed a lot to the game.
The impact of popular weightlifters of Manipur like Anita, Kunjarani, Sanamacha and others and their success at international sporting events paved the way for Mirabai and ultimately to her success in the ongoing Tokyo Olympic-2020, the statement added.
