AR recovers timber worth Rs 46.4 crore

Imphal, April 14 2021:
In pursuit to curbing the deforestation and subsequently smuggling of illegal timber, Shangshak Battalion of 10 Sector under the aegis of Headquarters IGAR (South) recovered illegal timber worth crores dumped in the jungles near Maku village, Kamjong District yesterday.
Based on the credible inputs regarding the illegal cutting of timber in the areas near Makan villages in Kamjong district, a team of Shangshak battalion carried out search operation yesterday and on thorough search of jungles near Maku village, a huge dump of illegal timber was found at three different locations, said a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
The recovered timber includes 550 logs of Pinewood, 150 logs of uncham wood and 150 logs of Teak wood measuring approximately 14400 cubic feet worth Rs 46.4 crore, added the statement.
On further search of the area and after initial questioning of the locals of Maku village, it was found that the timbers were cut from the nearby jungle including the areas between Chahong Khunao and Sana Lok River.
It was also revealed that these woods were to be illegally transported to Imphal and beyond , added the statement.
The DFO Kamjong has been informed for transporting the recovered illegal timber and further legal action.
