Imphal, November 04 2011:
Protesting against the failure of the government of Manipur to upgrade Jiribam sub-division to a full-fledged revenue district, Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) has decided to impose an indefinite total bandh along National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road) with effect from midnight of November 10 .
Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club here today, Convenor of JDDC M Maipaksana Mangang asserted that even after launching of various democratic agitations till October 17, the government remains indifferent to the demand for upgradation of Jiribam sub-division to a full-fledged revenue district although it went ahead with signing of an MoU with Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC), which resorted to violent agitation and imposed indefinite economic blockade along the National Highways causing untold miseries among the people.
Such discriminatory attitude of the government is unfortunate.
It is to rectify such discriminatory attitude and teach a lesson to the government that JDDC has decided to impose indefinite bandh.
Side-by-side, all government offices and institutions including schools and colleges in Jiribam would be picketed.
If the government does not act even after all these agitations, the entire population of Jiribam would boycott the upcoming Assembly election, Maipaksana announced.
Maipaksana denounced the ongoing hearing of the Committee on Re-organisation of District Administration and Police Boundaries and observed that it is meaningless for the people of Jiribam since the Delimitation Commission of India had already given its recommendation on upgradation of Jiribam sub-division to a full-fledged revenue district on November 20, 2006 .
