Under the shadow of the recent devastation caused by the furious hail storm, Chavan Kumhrin, the post-harvest festival of savouring the taste of the first food crops of the season has been celebrated with traditional fervour but on a sober note at the ground of Maha Union Government High School in Chandel district headquarters today.
Celebrated under the theme of 'Culture for unification', the event was made all the more colourful by presentation of various cultural items.
The inaugural function of this year's Chavan Kumhrin celebration was attended by Steering Committee member of NSCN TS Thumpa Turiiim and ANTA president Nula Kono as chief guest and functional president respectively.
Anallon Chiefs' Association RD Thungkhel, MACA president PS Shelhlung, Western Valley Area Chiefs' Association president HT Walngam, Chakpi Area Chiefs' Association Nula Wangam, Salum Area Chiefs' Association RD Kowar and Shathanglon Chiefs' Association KL Lumthu were also among those who graced the event as guests of honour.
Among the dignitaries who spoke at the occasion, Chandel A/C MLA BD Behring expressed serious concern over the devastation caused on standing crops in different parts of the district following heavy hail storm in the last couple of days and said the Government should compensated for the loss suffered.
While pointing out that the Government has relief fund at its disposal, the MLA stated firmly that no one should be allowed to misuse such fund.
He also fervently appealed to the Government for taking up necessary measures for the disbursement of relief materials to the affected farmers.
Cultural troupes coming from different parts of Chandel district enliven the sober celebration with their energetic cultural dances and folk songs.
