Imphal, August 27, 2012:
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that the Central Government immediately convene an all-party meeting in order to formulate a National policy on checking illegal migration.
Addressing a press meet at Irawat Bhawan today, Secretary of Manipur State Council, CPI, Dr M Nara said his party strongly condemn the mass exodus of students and professionals of North East from South Indian cities including Bangalore fearing a backlash of the clashes in Kokrajhar and other contiguous districts of Assam.
He said the CPI would press the Government for formulation of a National policy on illegal migration after the party deliberate the matter in its National Council which is scheduled to be held from September 5 in New Delhi.
Stating that the ongoing spat of violence in Assam was not of a recent development, Dr Nara said the issue is chronic.
He said the violence is the result of the failure of the Assam Government and Central Govern- ment in addressing the core issue at the right earnest.
Inclusion of illegal migrants in the electoral list for selfish political gain, issuance of driving licence, ration card made the migrants to rise against the indigenous communities, Dr Nara contended.
He also expressed deep apprehension that such violence could erupt in the State any time.
Hence formulation of a National policy on the issue is a must, the CPI leader said while adding that any delay on the matter could lead to a more vexed situation.
On the panchayat polls, Dr Nara said the upcoming panchayat election would be the most expensive as well as the most significant one in recent history.
He observed that the election campaign witnessed the spending of several lakhs of rupees and a muscle show by candidates while canvassing voters.
While stating that the trend has shown similarities with the 10th Legislative Assembly poll, the CPI politburo said it is not the true face of democracy.
Dr Nara affirmed that his party would stand against such electoral system while appealing the people to join them in fighting the system.
