Villages along the catchment areas of Thoubal river (Thoubal and Nungshangkong areas) have formed Thoubal River Catchment Area Wildlife Protection Committee (TRCAWP-C) today at Ukhrul to preserve flora and fauna of the areas.
A joint meeting of 12 villages including Ukhrul ADC members was held at Phungreitang community hall, Ukhrul.
The meeting adopted resolutions to preserve the catchment area as well as the forests in the area.
The meeting imposed prohibition on the use of chemical, battery and explosive while fishing in the river.
The meeting also resolute to restrict hunting and fishing during night time in both the Thoubal and Nungshangkong rivers.
Extraction of forest products, even for research works, is prohibited.
Prior permission has to be sought from the village authority concerned.
Any villagers who wishes to set fire for cultivation purposes in the forest must seek permission from the village authority concerned in advance.
Use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and weedicide are also prohibited, said the resolutions at the meeting.
The adopted rules and regulation for forest land preservation would be enforced equally irrespective of the community.
Befitting punishment and appropriate fine (from Rs 10,000 - Rs 50,000) will be imposed on the erring individual/groups, added the resolution of the meeting.
Atem A Shimray was elected as convener while AS Wungmayung Peter was elected co-convener of the newly formed committee.
VS Whig and RA Wungnaoyo were elected secretary and jt secretary respectively with Headman/Chairman including two VAs members of each villages as executive members of the protection committee.
