1st Imphal Intl Short Film Festival kicks off

The 1st Imphal International Short Film Festival (IISFF) organized jointly by Legend Studio and Action for Social Advancement with Hueiyen Lanpao daily as the official media partner started off at the Rup Mahal Theatre here today.
The film festival is being supported by Film Forum Manipur.
The inaugural function of the film festival was graced by Laimayum Surjakanta Sharma, Chairperson of Film Forum Manipur and Dr Naorem Iboton, Advisor of Action for Social Advancement as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Actor Tomba and Gourabidhu, Senior Lecturer of CAU were also present as Guests of Honour.
Koijam Brojen, President of SEACO, Arambam ongbi Robita, Founder of Young Women Help Organisation and Chandramani Khumancha, Working President of ACOAM-LUP were among others who were present as invitees and spoke at the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Laimayum Shantikumar Sharma said that Manipur can never be left out while discussing the history of India.
With regard to film industry in the country, Manipur has been left in the back seat for the last 10 years.
But soon after digital film was granted permission to participate in the National Film Festivals, Manipur films once again began to rise.
In the Indian Film Festival, 2001-12, a number of Manipuri films have received awards.
However, the State government did not even care to give a single word of encouragement not to speak of emotional or moral support to the Manipuri filmmakers.
He also stressed on the need for setting up a Film Achieve in the state saying that we all need to preserve the precious documentary films of the state.
Delivering the key note address, Mohen Naorem, Festival Director, IISSFF, 2012 said that the festival is being organised without any financial support from the state government or any other funding agency.
The purpose of the event is to encourage the trend producing short films in the state which can highlights the social issues and situations of the state appropriately.
He also expressed regret over non-participation of the documentary films of the state which have got National Awards, thereby depriving the people the opportunity seeing these films.
The Forlorn, a Bengali film by Saptaswa Basu was screened as the opening film of the festival.
Besides, nine other films were screened on the first day.
On the second day tomorrow, altogether l21 short films would be screened.
