Imphal, March 01 2018:
One Khaidem Jila Singh (34) s/o Kh Ibopishak of Mayang Imphal Thana Wangkhei Leikai, rescued a hog deer, which had become disoriented and handed the animal over to a combined team of Unique Wildlife Protection Committee (UWLPC) and personnel of Mayang Imphal commando post, today.
The hog deer will be released into the wild after proper treatment and nursing.
Khaidem Jila came across the hog deer at Langbam Hiram, located in between Maibam Phumlak and Yawa Lamjao, while going to his fish farm.
It may be mentioned that there was also a similar incident in which a hog deer was found, rescued and handed to the authorities from the area.
Hog deers are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, similar to the Sangai.
The recent surge in incidents of hog deer being found and rescued from Langbam Hiram area points toward the rising population of hog deer in the said area.
The UWLPC is reportedly planning to launch a survey and take up various hog deer conservation works at the area in collaboration with the Forest Department.
On the other hand, UWLPC has often appealed to the people living in the area as well as the fish farmers to refrain from washing the caught fishes in the water, setting fire to the suburbs etc which lead to adverse effects on the animals and wildlife living in the area.
