Imphal, October 03:
In a telling commentary on the corrupt practices among the Government officials, a case of swindling from the ex-gratia amount given to a person who died from electrocution in the devastating flood which occurred in 2000 in the valley areas of the State has come to light.
Instead of giving the full amount of Rs 1 lakh to the bereaved family of Md Bharat Khan of Thoubal Khekman Amakcham who died from electrocution, some of the staff in Electricity Department have allegedly swindled half of the amount.
The smooth operating act of the corrupt officials of the Electricity Department came to light after the father of the victim Md Rashid Abdul counter-checked with the bank pass book issued to him in connection with the payment of the ex-gratia.
Md Rashid, who came to the office of The Sangai Express today to lodge the complaint said that he received only Rs 50,000 although the ex-gratia amount to be given for the death of his son was Rs 1 lakh.
The ex-gratia amount was found to be deposited in two equal instalments of Rs 50,000 each under account no.21916 of Imphal Urban Co-operative Bank.
Though he had received the first instalment of Rs 50,000, the remaining amount had been withdrawn without his knowledge.
