Imphal, May 07 2021:
The Manipur People's Party has called on the State Government to provide security to Jessami village bordering Nagaland.
Tension often erupts at this border village with neighbouring Meluri village of Nagaland over land dispute and to prevent any untoward incident and provide, the village chief had asked the State Government to provide 200 VDF, said a press release issued by vice president of MPP Dr S Ibomcha.
S Ibomcha also appealed to the State Government to pay heed to their call and do the needful to ensure security to the Jessami villagers.
The State Government is the guardian of the State's territory and all communities residing in it, the MPP vice president said and questioned the silence even when Meluri villagers encroached and started jhum cultivation over lands apparently belonging to Jessami villagers with the help of Nagaland security forces.
The State Government should approach and apprise counterparts in Nagaland about the matter before the situation gets worse, he said.
The State Government should pay attention to the call of people of Jessami who have been protecting the State's boundary for years and ensure existings issues are settled amicably.
History has taught us the story of many kings and leaders who fought and gave up lives to defend and safeguard their territory, he reminded.
As per the demarcation carried out in 1947 by an Extra Assistant Commissioner of Nagaland, Tizu river should be the boundary between Manipur and Assam, he said and added that the State of Nagaland was formed in 1964, he recalled.
Jessami continued to remain within the boundary of Manipur, he said while ridiculing inaction on the part of the State Government to curb intrusion into the State's boundary at Jessami.
Ignoring Jessami people who are in distress will sharply contradict the Government's 'Go to hills' initiative, he continued while drawing the attention of the State Government to act responsibly.
