A Marahangshii (Bachelor dormitory), a centre to teach daily customary laws and traditions of Maram tribe to its younger generation, at Sagong village in Senapati district was inaugurated today.
Marahangshii also known as Maram Morung is custodian of customary laws and tradition of the Maram tribe where young people are educated, trained, disciplined and led to a responsible participation in the life of the village.
Maram tribe has its own way of introducing its young members to social responsibility like many other tribes.
Morung is not just a dormitory but maintained as a custodian of daily customary laws and tradition, preserving of rich cultural heritage and history, organizers of the inaugural function said maintaining that this is also true in the case of Marams as even married man sleep in Morung interacting and instructing younger ones.
This rich culture and tradition is retained by this group of young people for preserving the same.
This is a humble attempt to preserve the fast loosing and disappearing of their custom and cultures in this modern and contemporary world with the arrival of Christianity and modern education, they said.
They also expressed proud when the Morung, in traditional style to make the youths realize its importance for preserving this rich culture, was inaugurated today and said "This would also serve as a museum at present and in future.
The inauguration function, graced by the oldest person of the Maram tribe in Senapati, 105 year old Karainousiba Mangangmei as chief guest, was marked by presentation of cultural and traditional dance and songs.
Speaking at the gathering, the chief guest stressed the need for preserving the traditional cultures and custom of each and every tribe by the younger generations.
