The Solid Waste Management Plant, of which construction work is in progress at Lamdeng in Imphal West district, will be completed by March of next year 2011, said Chairman of the Planning and Development Authority (PDA), Kh Loken today.
Addressing as chief guest at the media sensitization programme of the Zero Garbage Campaign held today at Manipur Press Club, the chairman said that once the infrastructure development of the plant is complete, the problems of disposing waste products of Imphal city and Imphal Municipality Area will be solved.
Government has engaged a Hyderabad based firm, Ramki International Company, to run the plant.
The company has, in principle, agreed to operate the plant and as soon as a deal is signed between the company and authority concerned of the government within this month, September, he expressed.
Loken said that the government's goal of making Imphal city free from dirt will not be achieved without the support of the people.
Achieving the goal of the "Zero Garbage Campaign" lies with government going hand in hand with the people, he said.
Solid waste piled up at Nagamapal and under Keishampat bridge and into the Nambul river was dumped by the residents of the area and by people commuting to the city.
The sensitization programme meet was presided by the president of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), Khogendro Khongdam.
Commissioner of MUHUD, S Sunderlal, special administrative officer of IMC, N Geetkumar attended as guests of honour.
In his speech as guest of honour, S.Sunderlal termed the government's "Zero Garbage Campaign" as a milestone.
He expressed regret that the city is one of the dirtiest places he has come across.
