Imphal, January 08 2015:
Migratory birds found during winter season in and around Loktak lake would be counted from 50 vantage points by Forest Wildlife Wing in association with selected NGOs and civil organisations.
With the department making hectic preparations for the annual bird count, a motivation camp for volunteers and officials who would take part in the bird count would be held at Mayang Imphal on January 11, informed an official source.
Environmentalist Dr Khangenbam Shamungou said that the global climate change can be assessed to some extent from the number and varieties of bird species which migrate to Manipur annually.
The bird count would be very helpful in compiling a major data base for the migratory birds found in Manipur during winter season.
Dr Shamungou said that the number of migratory birds seen in and around Loktak lake this season is greater than the number of birds seen during previous years.
