SEC to launch attack on vendors selling liquor

With the coming of the 10th Manipur State Assembly Election, the Excise Department has set up a Special Enforcement Cell (SEC) to check selling of liquor in the state.
As a part of its strategy, the SEC is all set to launch its attacks on vendors selling liquor in Imphal area.
According to source from SEC, in accordance with instructions of the ECI, the state government has set up a Special Enforcement Cell under the Excise Department to check selling of liquor and other related drugs in the state, with the coming of the Assembly election.
The Cell has started to function from December 5 last.
The source further said that since the SEC has started its drive to counter the sell of liquor in the state, 9325 litres of local made liquor worth Rs 74500 and 45 cases of Indian made Foreign liquor worth Rs 3,30,000 have been recovered till January 15, 2012. Among the recovered liquors, 5825 litres of local made liquor worth Rs 49,500, were seized in December 2011 and 42 cases of Indian made Foreign Liquors and 9 bottles worth Rs 3 lakhs seized on January 3 had been burnt down.
Apart from these, another 2500 litres of local made liquor worth Rs 25,000 and 2 cases of Indian made foreign liquor worth Rs 30,000 will also be burnt and destroyed in a couple of days.
Altogether 40 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the recovered liquors and they have been bailed out.
The source further revealed that at present there are altogether 23 staffs in the SEC including four women and they are working 24 hours.
These staffs include 2 Inspectors, 4 Sub-Inspectors, 1 ASI and 15 constables.
These staffs will start their drive in Imphal area within a few days.
Bringing up the various problems faced by the staffs under the SEC, the source pointed out that no ration money is being given to the staffs and fares for hiring vehicles used in going for the drive is borne from their own pockets.
If the government comes up with some sort of help to the SEC, it will not only help in increasing the income of the government but also increase the quantityof liquors seized.
