Two weavers from State honoured with award by Ministry of Textile

Jiribam, February 14 2019: Two weavers from the State were among the 12 (twelve) national award winners who have been honoured in a grand function held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, 15 Janpath, New Delhi organized by Ministry of Textile, Govt of India on National Conclave on Creating Synergy for MSMEs in textile sector yesterday.

The function was attended by Dr Thawar Chand Gehlot, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment as chief guest while Smriti Zubin Irani, Minister for Textile and Ajay Tamta, Minister of State for Textile were also present as dais members.

As part of the function, 12 weavers (including two State weavers) selected from different parts of India were honoured with modest prizes by the Ministry of Textile.

The two State weavers are Kangjam Lebina Chanu (26) d/o K Binoy Singh, Bamon Kampu, Imphal West and L Achoubi Devi (47) w/o (L) RK Rojen Kumar Singh, Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai, Imphal West.

Kangjam Lebina Chanu was selected for the award under Divyang (Women) Left Body Paralysis, Speech impaired category while L Achoubi Devi was selected under women category.

Later, books written in ten different languages - Hindi, Manipuri, Assamese, Bengali, Odia, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada - were also released to make trading of textile business easy.

It may be mentioned that a 100 days support and outreach programme for MSMEs was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 2, last year under which 39 districts were selected for textile out of the total 100 districts selected under the outreach programme including 12 handlooms, 19 handicrafts and 8 powerlooms.

Earlier, as part of the 100 days support and outreach programme, different district level introduction programme for the selected district were also conducted on February 9 and 10 followed by Handloom, Handicrafts and Powerlooms exhibitions on February 11 and 12 .

Speaking at the occasion, chief guest Dr Thawar Chand Gehlot said that 70% of workers under MSMEs are from ST, SC and OBC category and urged the handicraft workers and weavers to take maximum advantage of the scheme under the ministry.

Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Panda among others spoke at length regarding the schemes and function.
