District Frontal Orgs conduct surprise drive at Senapati

Senapati, May 08 2019:
A surprise drive was carried out by the District Frontal Organizations led by the Naga People's Organization (NPO) and including Senapati District Students Association (SDSA), Senapati District Women's Association (SDWA), police personnel, village authority of Makhrelui village in association with the Weight & Measures Department, Senapati district at around 33 meat and fish stalls in the District HQs.
During the process, nine stalls were found not registered to the Town Committee, Senapati and only two, each from meat and fish stall, were found using genuine weighing scales.
Meanwhile, variations were found in the beam balance of the weighing scale and misappropriate weight in the weighing stones.
Later, the volunteers seized the weighing tools and the wares of the defaulters.
Solomon Arow, president, NPO stated that the drive was taken up after receiving many complaints from the public citing weight misappropriation while selling meat/fish as the reason.
Stating that such manipulations should be dealt severely and quickly, he warned the defaulters that their license would be cancelled if disparities are found in the weighing scales and added that fines will also be imposed on them.
The Weight & Measures Department under Consumer Affairs said that, according to the Indian Legal Metrology Act 2011 and Packaged Commodity Act, 2013, certain standards have been laid out which should be followed while using weighing scales/ machines for commercial purposes.
Use of stones is never permitted by the Department and is against the rules while only authorised and certified by the department should be used for commercial purposes, the officials added.
The defaulters were instructed that the seized weighing scales would be disposed off and advised to use only the certified weighing scales recommended by the Weight & Measures Department.
