Imphal, September 26 2013:
Although the NE Region and the State hold huge dairy development potential and marketing scope, the growing production in the region still substantially fall short of the ever growing demand for milk and milk products resulting in substantial import of dairy products from outside NE region.
This was observed during the North East regional review meeting on Intensive Dairy Development Programme (IDDP) held today at Classic Hotel here.
According to a statement, the meeting was chaired by Rajni Sekhri Sibbal, Joint Secretary (C&DD), Ministry of Agriculture, Govt of India.
The review meeting was attended by senior officers related to dairy development from Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
The meet reviewed the good and growing dairy industry in the NE region, particularly in the last 10 years.
The meeting further noted that concerted efforts by all concerned including IDDP will go a long way to further boost up production and dairying culture in the region.
The long term objective is that the region becomes self sufficient and eventually even export some day.
Given the present trend, this could become a reality in the days to come.
For this, the Milk Producers Cooperative Societies and farmers have a major role and responsibility.
