Kangpokpi, January 03 2020:
New Year 2020 celebration at Kangpokpi District Headquarters culminated today with an idea of pioneering equality among all people as it celebrated the New Year 2020 as '20-20: Year of Equality'.
With the idea of promoting equality, Kangpokpi Ward no 14 (Kholmun Veng) Chairman, Thangjangam Lhanghal, who is also a member of Kangpokpi Town Committee distributed a shawl each to over 20 individuals from his ward including differently-abled persons, widows and elders during New year celebration on January 1 .
"It was to show them that they [the differently-abled persons and aged people] are also part of the society and their contributions are well recognized and it was also a message to the world that everyone is equal in the eye of the Lord and as well as the law", the Chairman said.
Ward no 14 under the administrative jurisdiction of Kangpokpi Town, which is also known as Kholmun Veng is a locality where victims of the 'Kuki Genocide', allegedly perpetrated by the NSCN-IM, are being rehabilitated.
Saying that their Church is under construction without any assistance from the Government and they have no proper place to celebrate Christmas and New Year, he added that the people of Ward no 14 still welcome the New Year with equal happiness and joy inside a crumbling temporary hall.
Despite all grievances, people of Kholmun Veng are the first to initiate the celebration of 'Year of Equality' in the town and an inspiration to all Churches, who later promote the idea of equality throughout the New Year celebration, the Chairman continued.
While seeking blessing from the aged people, he encouraged the denizens of his ward to stand united to make Kholmun Veng the most progressive and best ward.
Meanwhile, Kangpokpi Town Committee and Kangpokpi Youth Union also visited all Churches of the town during the second day of the New Year with an idea of equality and distributed sweets to every Church.
Kangpokpi Youth Union president, Haolet Khongsai said that Kangpokpi, which was earlier just a small town, is one of the most advanced District Headquarters in the State.
We are happy to celebrate the New Year 2020 as 'Year of Equality' because if there is no equality among the people there cannot be unity which is the backbone of all development, he said and urged all Churches to pray for the youths of the town throughout the year so that they could serve the society better.
