The 61st Territorial Army Day was observed with a solemn function held at GM Hall here today.
Chief Minister O Ibobi was the chief guest and GOC, Red Shield Division, Maj Gen DS Hooda was the president at the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi poured encomiums on the Territorial Army, which, he said, has made remarkable contributions to India.
He also expressed his desire for youths of the state to be recruited in the Territorial Army.
He said, earlier the Indian Territorial Army was an Auxiliary Force known as Indian Territorial Force.
The Territorial Army Act was passed in the parliament in 1948, and it became a separate force which assisted the regular Army.
First Governor General of India, C Gopalchariya launched the Force.
Since a battalion for Manipur has been set up, today it has become an important force.
Specially in a state like Manipur where insurgency is active, the role of Territorial Army is very significant, the Chief Minister said.
CO of 165 Bn of Territorial Army, Col George presented the Chief Minister a shawl which read "Gaon Bura".
Apart from several other officers and many personnel of TA, DGP Manipur Y Joykumar was also present at the function.
