Imphal, May 17 2018:
Strongly condemning the alleged Thangmeiband rape case and the Thanga gang rape case, Socialist Students' Union of Manipur (SSUM) has warned of taking up various forms of agitation in case the Government fails to enforce the resolutions to be adopted by an all political parties meet slated for May 20 with regard to the cases.
Addressing media persons at its Keishampat Laishom Leirak office today, SSUM convenor Naorem Tanoranjan decried the Government's failure to arrest the main accused in the Thanga gang rape case despite establishing his identity.
Quoting the recount of the victim's family, he alleged that failure on the part of police to apprehend the main accused is due to the interference by a key functionary of BJP Manipur Pradesh.
He demanded the Government to take appropriate action against the key functionary and expel him from the post for abuse of power.
He asked as to why the Government is still failing to seize the van used by the accused for abducting and allegedly raping the minor girl.
While expressing grave concern over the rampant crimes against women in the State, Tanoranjan lauded the courage of those rape victims and their families for breaking their silence on the incidents as many victims tend to remain mute out of fear and social stigma.
He cautioned that the union is all set to launch various forms of agitation if the Government does not implement the resolutions to be taken by the political parties in connection with the cases.
SSUM and Proletarian Feminist Movement, Manipur along with students staged protest demonstrations in different schools demanding immediate arrest of all the individuals involved in the cases and justice for the victims at the earliest.
The schools where the protests were staged are Fancier Abhiram Higher Secondary School, Vision Creative School of Science, Somarandro Sana Royal Higher Secondary School, Memorial Model Academy and Manipur Standard English School.
